TPACK in my classroom!

It is easy to discuss a lesson idea with colleagues. But what is it that we actually do to form an effective lesson plan? TPACK, or Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge is defined as a “framework that helps teachers consider how their knowledge domains intersect in order to effectively teach and engage students with technology” (Common Sense Education, 2016). Understanding how to dissect a lesson supports a teacher's understanding of each knowledge domain needed for a well-planned lesson. Another perspective would be to understand TPACK to build on each domain's relationship to build an effective lesson. The image above demonstrates how I would use TPACK to build an American Government lesson in my own classroom. Using interactive technology supports engagement, therefore, the best technology to use is Pear Deck. I can upload videos, insert prompts that require written responses, and take polls. My example above is to teach the obligations of citizens using California Standards for twelfth-grade History. In this example, I'd also ask students to respond to an Agree/Disagree question slide on what should be considered an obligation of citizens. Soon after, I'd discuss what is actually considered an obligation. I'd use Think-Pair-Share as my pedagogical strategy to allow clarification, maximize engagement, and encourage discussion amongst the whole group.
